MANAGEMENT

• Removal of foreign body and topical antibiotics to aid corneal wound healing

1. Using a slit-lamp, apply topical anaesthetic e.g. proxymetacaine 0.5%

2. Ensure the patient is positioned correctly and focus the slit-lamp

3. Use the sides of the patients head rest to stabilise your hand during the procedure

4. Using a 19-30g needle, tip pointing away from the globe, bevel side up, gently scrape the foreign body using the bevel edge

5. Topical antibiotics (e.g. chloramphenicol 1% QDS for 5/7)

Refer within 48 hours if unable to remove foreign body
